Washing outside of home. How to negociate a place between intimacy and urban service ?

Résumé

Until the 1960s in Europe, it was commonplace for many social groups to wash themselves outside of home. Public baths were available in almost every town, providing access to hot showers, baths and washbasins, either for a small fee or free of charge. As bathrooms became commonplace in homes, most of these public establishments closed, with the exception of a few notable exceptions in Paris or Brussels. Today, washing away from home has become a marginal practice, limited to those who have no home of their own, and local authorities often devolve its management to associations helping homeless people. Yet the need for this public service has never disappeared. In France, 4 to 8% of urban homes do not have a bathroom. More than 2 million people live in homes with inadequate or non-existent sanitary facilities. Moreover, there is no information on the number of residents whose bathroom is inadequate due to their health status or physical abilities. Our research findings show that all current shower facilities in urban areas are extremely crowded, and that users compete against each others depending on their profile (women, homeless people, migrants, drug addicts). This situation leads to avoidance and even self-exclusion.  The aim is therefore to examine the material and symbolic dimensions of a service located out of home that is taking care of the most intimate practices (washing, undressing) for people in precarious situations, and observe its impact on social relations of domination.
