Halaesa (Tusa, Messina): undertakings of the French Archaeological Mission, 2016–2019: the discovery of the theatre and problems in its excavation

Résumé

The ancient city of Halaesa is situated on an elongated hill that branches off from the mountain chain of Madonie, in the middle of the northern coast of Sicily. This hill is divided between two summits that are oriented at slightly different angles, pointing towards the Tyrrhenian Sea. Diodorus passed down two very different accounts of its foundation. According to the first, and least accepted, version, the Carthaginians established the city in 405 BC.
