Native Traces in the Art of the United States During the First Half of the Twentieth Century

Résumé

During the first half of the 20th century, several artists in the United States created works of art inspired by Native American art. Among them, the painters Emil Bisttram, George L. K. Morris, Richard Pousette-Dart, Jackson Pollock and Steve Wheeler reworked motifs and subjects of indigenous origin, and formulated diverse interpretations of native America. The result was an art that fused various aesthetics and managed to expand the modern paradigm beyond the European reference. This article analyzes the different ways in which these US artists carried out such artistic reworkings.
