Landscape and local factors shaping infestation rates of wild and garden cherry trees by the invasive fruit fly Drosophila suzukii

The spotted-wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura), is an invasive fly that has been spreading in Europe since 2008. This pest infests cultivated fruit, particularly cherry crops, with large damage on fruit production. Beyond orchards, D. suzukii also infests wild cherry as well as sweet and sour cherry trees from gardens or abandoned lands. These alternative reservoirs scattered throughout the landscape could contribute to maintain its populations outside production areas. This study aimed to understand and quantify the relative influences of climatic, landscape, and local factors on the infestation rates of wild cherry and unmanaged domestic sweet and sour cherry trees. The study was conducted between May and July 2025 on 60 trees in Picardy and Normandy (northern regions of France). Fruits, sampled at different stages of ripeness, were collected both from the tree and from the ground. Upon collection, they were characterized morphologically and chemically (pH, sugar content) and then placed under laboratory conditions until the emergence of fruit flies which were identified to the species level. Local environment conditions (tree traits, vegetation structure and composition, meteorology, etc.) and landscape composition around cherry trees were also recorded. First results showed that D. suzukii was predominant on fruits sampled from the canopy, while native Drosophilidae communities were more diverse in fruits collected on the ground. The cherry fruit infestations peaked in early July and were positively correlated with fruit sugar content. Similarly, increased infestation by D. suzukii was associated with the presence of anthropized areas and habitats offering refuges (gardens, orchards). These results highlight the role of abandoned or unmanaged cherry trees in maintaining and dispersing D. suzukii populations which should be considered in IPM strategies.
